Hélène Deacon

Title: Professor of Language and Literacy, Dalhousie
Email: helene.deacon@dal.ca

Dr. Hélène Deacon is the Director of the Language and Literacy Lab at Dalhousie University (http://langlitlab.psychology.dal.ca). Her research examines the development of reading and writing skills. To this end, she conducts cross-sectional and longitudinal studies with monolingual and bilingual children, and adults. She came to this area of research following on from her initiation into research in bilingualism as an undergraduate at the University of Prince Edward Island. Her research is currently funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Councils of Canada, as well as by the March of Dimes Foundation and the National Academy of Education.

Outside of the academic sphere, Hélène loves to spend time in the outdoors, hiking, cycling or running in the many beautiful places in the Maritimes. She is also trying to raise a bilingual cat, who seems more intent on unloading the sock drawer than on learning French.
