The objectives of this project are threefold: to evaluate the influence of family literacy programs on literacy promoting and child preliteracy activities; to examine program implementation; and to determine program cost effectiveness. This research will provide useful evidence on the delivery and impact of family literacy programs in the Maritime Provinces, with the goal of improving the region's low literacy rates.

This collaborative project unites researchers from the IWK Health Centre, Dalhousie University, St. Francis Xavier University, University of New Brunswick and the University of Prince Edward Island. Project staff will utilize focus groups as well as in-person and computer-assisted telephone interviews (CATI) to collect quantitative and qualitative data from 8 program sites in 3 provinces:

  • Nova Scotia: Halifax, Sydney, Yarmouth
  • New Brunswick: Saint John, Fredericton, Woodstock
  • Prince Edward Island: Charlottetown, Summerside
